:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Todd -- 30 years later - much better on a second reading. : When I read this last, I was 20. And I did not yet speak German - not really at all. What a delight to read it again 30 years later (for free, in electronic form, where any unremembered vocabulary can be translated, or looked up with a touch) This time through, I got to enjoy the inventiveness and sophistication with which Kafka tells this story - a towering first of its kind - and also enjoy the style, wit and language he employs to convey the horror, absurdity and humor this story is still famous for. Now, in its original language, slower reading by far, it is a more powerful and beautiful book than I remember it to be. A great deal gets "lost in translation," as it is said. Die fundiertesten Betrachtungen stammen von seinem Freund Max Brod (der sie sicher mit einiger Berechtigung vorbringt). Aber in neuerer Zeit führten z.B. Theodor W. Adorno an, dass es womöglich in beruflicher Tätigkeit begründet liegen kann, dass es auch um Macht und Ausübung der Macht gehen könnte, der ein zeitgenössischer normaler Mensch am Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts hilflos ausgesetzt war. In der heutigen Zeit gewinnen Kafkas Romane deswegen wieder an Popularität, weil eines seiner Hauptthemen eben jene Macht ist, die sich aus einer anonymen Quelle speist und/oder einer anonymen Stelle ausgeübt wird.
